Navratri is just on the doorstep and people have started preparing to welcome goddess Durga in their own way. This auspicious festival celebrates the victory of good over bad or evil. It is that time of the year when people buy new clothes, jewellery, offer prayers to goddess Durga and observe fasts.
Navratri is celebrated all over the country in different ways according to different customs and traditions. As per Hindu Panchang calendar, Navratri festival falls in the month of Ashvin Shukla Prathama and ends on Ashvin Shukla Navami which is in September or October according to the Gregorian calendar.
This year, nine days of Navratri are going to be celebrated from 17th October to 25th October.
Nine Days of Navratri
The nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped during the nine-day festival of Navratri. Each day of Navratri has a gemstone associated with it. Day 1 – Shailputri, the first form of Maa Durga, is worshipped on the first day of Navratri. She is the goddess revered as the remover of financial problems.

One of the most worshipped goddesses in the Hindu religion, Maa Durga is a symbol of strength, power, and wisdom. The ten arms of Durga carry weapons with each weapon having its own significance and symbolism.
1. Shankh or Conch Shell: Shankh or conch shell holds a great ritual and spiritual significance in Hinduism. Blowing of shankh produces a primordial sound called 'AUM' from which the entire universe is believed to have emerged.
2. Sudarshan Chakra: One of the most powerful weapons of the universe, Sudarshan Chakra is associated with Lord Vishnu. Believed to be the sphere of life, this chakra keeps on revolving till we are alive. This Vishnu’s gift symbolises that Durga is the center of creation and all the universe revolves around her.
3. Lotus: The lotus is the symbol of Brahma, and represents wisdom, as well as liberation through knowledge. Lotus flower represents purity and divinity and has a special place in Hindu rituals.
4. Sword: Sword is a symbol of power, protection, strength, and courage. It marks the sharpness of intellect enjoining humans to use the sense of discrimination to overcome their negativity.
5. Bow & Arrow: The bow and arrow are the symbols of energy. While the bow represents potential energy, the arrow represents the kinetic energy.
6. Trishul: The trishul or the trident has three sharp edges meaning that humans are composed of three qualities namely Tamas (inactivity and lethargic tendency), Rajas (hyperactivity and desires) and Sattva (positivity and purity).
7. Mace/Gada: Gada or Mace is a symbol of power and authority. It encourages humans to manifest loyalty, love and reverence to Mother Durga.
8. Vajra/Thunderbolt: Vajra or Thunderbolt is associated with Indra and symbolises firmness of character, determination, and supreme power.
9. Snake: The tenth hand of Durga is actually supposed to be holding a snake given by Lord Shiva. It signifies consciousness and the masculine energy of Shiva.
10. Club or Axe: Given by Vishwakarma, club or axe signifies no fear of consequences while fighting the evil. It also symbolizes the killing of evil feelings from within.
