Lord Ganesha or Vinayaka (The remover of obstacles) is a symbol of wisdom and power and highly revered in Indian mythology, echoing in various forms in pan-Indian traditions. Celebrated as a ten-day event that starts on the fourth (chaturthi) day of the Hindu luni-solar calendar month Bhadrapada, people invite Ganesha or bring idols of Ganpati into their homes to seek his divine blessings and after the ten-day long festivities, immerse the idol in the ocean as a mark of his journey back home to Kailasa. Also celebrated as a community festival by historic leaders like Shivaji and Lokmanya Tilak, Lord Ganesha is believed to unite different clans together under his reign by removing communal differences in their beliefs.
