'O Lord Ganesha, who has a curved trunk and large body and who has the brilliance of a million suns; O Lord, please remove all obstacles from the actions I perform.'
Lord Ganesha or Vinayaka (The remover of obstacles) is a symbol of wisdom and power and highly revered in Indian mythology, echoing in various forms in pan-Indian traditions. Celebrated as the God who brings success by removing obstacles in one's path, Ganpati is invoked before all religious ceremonies and before celebrations of new beginnings or journeys to shower his blessings on the 'gana' or the clan. Albeit lovingly worshipped as Gajanan (one with the elephant head) or Lambodara (one with a pot belly), the Lord is considered a supreme almighty and harbinger of success. Legend has it that the Hindu Symbol Om is a Ganesha's personification of the 'primal sound' that purifies everything.
Ganesha Chaturthi or Ganesha Chavithi is celebrated in India as a day to honour and revere the love and protection provided by their 'deva'. Celebrated as a ten-day event that starts on the fourth (chaturthi) day of the Hindu luni-solar calendar month Bhadrapada, people invite Ganesha or bring idols of Ganpati into their homes to seek his divine blessings and after the ten-day long festivities, immerse the idol in the ocean as a mark of his journey back home to Kailasa. Also celebrated as a community festival by historic leaders like Shivaji and Lokmanya Tilak, Lord Ganesha is believed to unite different clans together under his reign by removing communal differences in their beliefs.
